Published 3 Nov 2026 · 8 items

This week: US diesel keeps rising, UK diesel sits just under £2 a litre, South Africa announces temporary fuel levy relief, and the big fuel card groups report a strong quarter. Figures cover roughly 21 October to 1 November 2026.

WEX earns more from high fuel prices, and late fees are climbing

WEX reported third-quarter revenue of $780.1 million, up 12.8% on a year ago, with higher fuel prices adding $57.3 million. Its Mobility (fleet card) segment grew revenue 20.6% to $435.1 million while transactions rose only 1.7%. Late fee revenue reached $95.0 million, up from $67.2 million in the same quarter last year.

What it means for fleets: Higher pump prices mean bigger card balances, and WEX's late fee income is up about 41% in a year. Check your payment terms and use automatic payment so one missed due date does not cancel out your fuel discount.

Edenred's fleet business keeps up double-digit growth

Edenred, the group behind the UTA fuel card, said Mobility operating revenue rose to €202 million in the third quarter, up 10.7% like for like. It put this down to solid growth in its fuel card business, helped only slightly by higher fuel prices, plus double-digit growth in services beyond fuel such as tolls, EV charging and VAT recovery in Europe. Germany and France were named as strong markets.

What it means for fleets: Card providers are selling tolls, EV charging and VAT recovery alongside fuel. If you run vehicles across Europe, ask whether one account for all of these saves admin, and compare total fees rather than just the fuel discount.

Allstar says EV charging needs the same control as fuel cards

Tom Rowlands, who runs global EV solutions at Corpay (owner of the Allstar brand), says that as vans, HGVs and coaches go electric, charging gets split across depots, shared sites and public chargers, each with its own payment and reporting. He points to the Association of Fleet Professionals' shared charging scheme, now in 15 London boroughs, as one way to widen access. His argument is that fleets should not lose the spend visibility they have with fuel cards. This is a provider's view rather than independent research.

What it means for fleets: If you are adding EVs, ask your card provider how depot, shared and public charging will appear on one invoice, so you can still see who charged, which vehicle and what it cost.

Fuel prices

US diesel climbs again to $6.35 a gallon

The US Energy Information Administration put the average on-highway diesel price at $6.352 a gallon for the week of 26 October, up 7.6 cents on the week and $2.634 higher than a year earlier. Regular petrol (gasoline) slipped 1.5 cents to $4.269. Regional diesel moves were mixed: up 15.0 cents in the Lower Atlantic and 12.8 cents in the Midwest, but down 8.7 cents in California to $8.155.

What it means for fleets: Diesel is roughly 70% dearer than a year ago, so budgets set on last year's prices will be well out. It is worth checking what your card's discount is really worth per gallon at the sites your drivers use most.

UK diesel stays just under £2 a litre

Government weekly figures for 26 October put the average UK pump price of diesel at 199.22p a litre, a touch lower than 199.33p the week before and 200.04p on 12 October. Petrol averaged 174.07p. Fuel duty is unchanged at 52.95p a litre for both fuels, with VAT at 20% on top.

What it means for fleets: Diesel is about 25p a litre dearer than petrol. If you are on a bunkered or fixed weekly price card, compare your invoiced price with this weekly average to check the deal is still paying off.

Australian diesel edges up as New Zealand holds steady

The Australian Institute of Petroleum's report for the week to 1 November puts the national average retail diesel price at 280.1 cents a litre, up 0.8 cents, after a 1.4 cent fall the week before. The national average wholesale (terminal gate) price rose faster, to 266.1 cents from 261.9 cents. In New Zealand, MBIE's provisional data for the week to 23 October has the average diesel board price at about 323.9 cents a litre, little changed from 324.5 cents.

What it means for fleets: AIP notes that retail prices follow wholesale moves with a lag, so the 4.2 cent wholesale rise in Australia may still reach the pump. Fleets buying bulk diesel for On-Site tanks on terminal gate pricing will see it first.

On-Site and tank tech

Tanker gauge adds overfill shutoff and months of load logs

Garnet Instruments' SeeLeveL Flair 808-BT3 tracks liquid level and temperature in up to two compartments on fuel trucks and trailers. It can warn as a compartment nears full and shut off the pump at maximum level, and it links to vehicle and fleet systems over CAN or RS485, with Bluetooth set-up through a phone app. Garnet says it keeps months of records of alarms and level changes, which can support custody transfer paperwork. The source is a sponsored article.

What it means for fleets: If you run your own tanker or bowser to refuel vehicles On-Site, overfill shutoff and stored load logs help with safety checks and with reconciling what was delivered against what was dispensed. As the article is sponsored, confirm specifications and pricing with the supplier.

Policy and tax

South Africa cuts its fuel levy through the holidays

In the Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement on 21 October, Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana announced temporary fuel levy relief of R3 a litre on diesel and R1.50 a litre on petrol from 4 November to 1 December 2026. A smaller cut of R1.50 on diesel and R1 on petrol then applies until 5 January 2027. The R10 billion cost is to be covered by returning R10 billion from the Central Energy Fund.

What it means for fleets: Diesel fleets get the bigger saving, but it is temporary and steps down in December, so do not build it into 2027 budgets. The official November pump price adjustment from the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources had not been published when we checked.
